About the event

ABOUT THE FILMS:

METROPOLIS By Fritz Lang (1927)

In a futuristic city sharply divided between the working class and the city planners, the son of the city's mastermind falls in love with a working-class prophet who predicts the coming of a savior to mediate their differences.

About the filmmaker:

Fritz Lang was an Austrian-American film director, screenwriter, and producer who worked in Germany and later the United States. One of the best-known émigrés from Germany's school of Expressionism, he was dubbed the "Master of Darkness" by the British Film Institute. He has been cited as one of the most influential filmmakers of all time. Lang's most celebrated films include the groundbreaking futuristic science-fiction film Metropolis (1927) and the influential M (1931), a film noir precursor.

THE SHAVER MYSTERY By Dean Bertram (2024)

Was sci-fi writer Richard Shaver really abducted and tormented by a malevolent underground race of hideous humanoids, known as the “Dero”? Regardless, his “true” stories – known collectively as “The Shaver Mystery” and sometimes ghost written by editor Raymond A. Palmer - were the most successful and controversial sci-fi tales of the mid 20th century. They drove sales and circulation of the pulp magazine AMAZING STORIES to all time record highs, and paved the way for the emergence of UFO lore.  A short, stand alone, segment, cribbed from Dean Bertram's upcoming feature documentary THE MAN WHO INVENTED FLYING SAUCERS: A film about Ray Palmer, the Shaver Mystery, and the creation of modern UFO belief.

About the filmmaker:

Dean Bertram has a PhD in history from the University of Sydney, Australia. His doctoral dissertation was titled “Flying Saucer Culture: An Historical Survey of American UFO Belief”. His writings have featured in a range of publications, including Fortean Times, People Magazine, The Spectator, and The Australian. He hosts the podcast Talking Weird on the Untold Radio Network.  Dean is also a filmmaker and film festival programmer. He runs MidWest WeirdFest and A Night of Horror International Film Festival, both based in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. And he is currently shooting a feature documentary about Raymond A. Palmer, the Shaver Mystery, and the birth of modern UFO belief, titled THE MAN WHO INVENTED FLYING SAUCERS.
